Bereavement & Depression

Grief is a natural emotional response to the loss of a loved one,
a significant relationship or traumatic event. It can manifest as intense sadness, a sense of emptiness, frequent crying, loss of interest in usual activities, sleep and appetite disturbances, irritability and loss of energy. Grief is an individual process, which varies from one person to another in terms of duration, intensity and the way in which it is experienced.

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite and sleep, severe fatigue, difficulty concentrating, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, thoughts of death or suicide, and an overall decrease in social, professional and personal functioning. Unlike grief, depression is not necessarily linked to a specific event of loss, but can be triggered by a variety of factors, including chemical imbalances in the brain, genetic factors, stressful life events, physical illness or underlying psychological problems.
